This is the first piece of art I've completed since returning to the UK.
As with so many of my paintings, the inspiration for this piece came whilst on a walk. A group of widgeons were spooked for some reason, and circled around us quite a few times, before settling back into the same spot. They came pretty close, so we felt very lucky to have the view repeatedly.
The trip to Costa Rica did many things, but this painting has shown me it's crystallised my style, this is definitely how I want to do all my paintings from here on in. I no longer dilute the paint and feel like I've finally worked out how to paint. I know that sounds strange, but I now use the way the paint is applied to complete the picture, rather than trying to make it represent my subject matter exactly.
